Freelance Contract Addendum Template: Update Project Terms Without Starting Over
Projects change. A contract addendum gives you a clean way to record the change without rewriting the entire agreement or relying on a thread of scattered emails.
Use an addendum when the client wants extra deliverables, a different timeline, new payment milestones, or a revised responsibility. It is not bureaucracy—it is how you turn “we discussed it” into a shared operating plan.
When an Addendum Is the Right Tool
An addendum works best when the original contract is still valid and both parties agree to change one defined part of it. Common triggers include:
- A new deliverable or service phase.
- A client-caused delay that changes the timeline.
- A revised fee or payment schedule.
- A new approval, revision, or support requirement.
If the entire relationship is changing—new business entity, new service model, or an expired agreement—a fresh contract may be cleaner. But for a contained change, an addendum keeps the record simple.
What Every Freelance Contract Addendum Should Include
Start with the original agreement. Include the client name, your name, the effective date, and the date of the original contract. Then state the exact section being changed.
Each addendum needs five clear elements:
- Purpose: what changed and why.
- Revised scope: included work, exclusions, and client responsibilities.
- Commercial terms: fee, payment dates, and any deposit.
- Schedule: revised milestones, feedback windows, and final delivery date.
- Confirmation: all other terms stay in effect unless the addendum says otherwise.
Avoid phrases like “additional support as needed.” Name the number of calls, rounds, hours, files, or deliverables. Precision is what makes the addendum useful when memories diverge later.

Send It With a Decision Deadline
Pair the addendum with a concise note that explains what happens next:
I’ve attached the addendum covering the additional [deliverable] and revised timeline. Please review and approve by [date] so I can reserve the work in the production schedule.
Do not start the extra work merely because the client verbally agreed. The signed or explicitly approved addendum is the green light.
